Philippine gov't sees no international backlash if Arroyo placed in detention facility
The Philippine government downplayed on Monday any possible international backlash if former president and incumbent congresswoman Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo would be detained in a police detention facility.
Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte clarified that it is not the executive branch that will decide where to detain the former president, who is facing election sabotage case.
"We have been consistent from the very beginning in saying that this matter is now solely with the trial court," she said, adding that President Benigno Aquino III was only pushing for accountability.
"We cannot think why this could create a backlash if the President was only following his promise to have accountability on the bad things that happened before," Valte said.
Some senators have warned that a possible international backlash might occur on the Aquino administration if the government would insist in detaining Arroyo to a regular facility.
Arroyo is currently under hospital arrest since a regional trial court issued a warrant of arrest on her election fraud case more than a week ago.
